Alan Peat Sentence Progression KS1 & KS2
In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 at Heyford Park School we use the Alan Peat Sentence Structure model to support children’s learning of sentence types, grammar and writing. Alan Peat’s ‘exciting sentences’, coupled with accurate teaching of the correct technical terminology, ensures that we are meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum by giving the children to explore a variety of sentence structures across the key stages.
We have created a policy for progression of these sentence types mapped against various text types; this introduces these ‘exciting sentences’ at the right time to coincide with the expectations of the national curriculum. Learning of sentence types builds from year to year and sentence types are revisited each year so that they are completely embedded in the child’s sentence repertoire. By the end of year six, we hope that children will have a repertoire of over 20 ambitious sentence types in their toolkit.
